The Meteorological Department has predicted heavy rainfall in most districts of southern West Bengal, including Kolkata, this week due to a low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal. The state government has alerted coastal district administrations, advising fishermen not to venture into the sea from August 8 to 11.
A “yellow warning” has been issued for certain locations in South 24 Parganas, Jhargram, and East and West Midnapore districts of South Bengal, where heavy rain (7-11 cm) is expected on Tuesday. Light to moderate rain was observed in Kolkata and other parts of the state on Monday morning.
The Alipore Meteorological Department explained that a well-marked low-pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal is likely to concentrate into a depression, moving west-northwestwards across Odisha and Chhattisgarh. This development is expected to enhance rainfall activity in South Bengal from August 9 to 11.
Anticipating the potential impact on normal life, the state government is taking measures to minimize the effects of the changing weather. Additionally, a ‘wind warning’ has been issued, indicating the likelihood of gusty winds at speeds of 40-50 km/h in North and South 24 Parganas, Jhargram, East and West Midnapore districts on August 10. Fishermen are advised to refrain from venturing into the sea during the specified period. Furthermore, a thunderstorm forecast has been issued for the entire day across all districts of South Bengal.
